Role Overview
The Industrials Investment Analyst will be responsible for sourcing, analyzing, and monitoring long and short investment opportunities within the industrials sector. The analyst will work closely with the Portfolio Manager(s) to develop high-conviction ideas supported by detailed fundamental research, financial modeling, and variant thesis development.
Key Responsibilities
Investment Research & Idea Generation
- Identify attractive long and short equity opportunities across the industrials universe (e.g., capital goods, machinery, aerospace & defense, transportation, building products, multi-industrials).
- Develop differentiated investment theses grounded in industry structure, competitive dynamics, and company-specific fundamentals.
- Conduct deep-dive research on business models, end markets, cost structures, pricing power, and secular vs. cyclical drivers.
- Build and maintain detailed, bottoms-up financial models (3-statement, segment-level, scenario and sensitivity analysis).
- Analyze unit economics, margin drivers, cash flow generation, capital allocation, and balance sheet risk.
- Evaluate valuation across multiple frameworks (DCF, comparables, sum-of-the-parts, cycle-normalized metrics).
- Conduct primary research including management calls, expert networks, industry contacts, and channel checks.
- Track industry data, macro inputs, and leading indicators relevant to industrial end markets.
- Monitor earnings, guidance, competitive developments, and thesis-changing events.
- Present investment ideas clearly and concisely to Portfolio Manager(s).
- Assist in position sizing, timing, and risk assessment for both long and short positions.
- Continuously reassess existing positions and recommend exits or thesis revisions as facts change.
Required
- 2-5+ years of experience in equity research, investment banking, private equity, or a hedge fund, with strong exposure to industrial companies.
- Demonstrated ability to generate actionable long and/or short investment ideas.
- Advanced financial modeling and accounting skills.
- Strong analytical rigor with attention to detail and intellectual honesty.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Buy-side experience at a long/short equity hedge fund.
- Deep familiarity with at least one industrial sub-sector.
- Experience analyzing cyclical businesses and operating leverage.
- CFA designation or progress toward CFA is a plus.
