Description
The Lead Mechanical Engineer Technologist / Fabricator will be responsible for conducting fabrication activities, managing multiple projects, collaborating with diverse and multi-generational teams across the UMDI enterprise to achieve program goals in an air-conditioned fabrication facility. This role requires a blend of technical expertise, leadership, and imagination to drive innovation and ensure the successful execution of projects.
Key Responsibilities:
- Fabrication: Fabricate subsystems and systems from given designs using steel, aluminum, plastic, wood, other and novel materials and methods.
- Technology Development: Advance use of welding cobot. Develop and execute technology roadmaps to guide capital investments across fabrication and manufacturing capabilities.
- Design & Engineering: Participate in the design, analysis, development of, and lead the fabrication of mechanical systems, including custom mechanical devices, robotics and structural/mechanical installations. Utilize SolidWorks and other engineering tools to review and modify designs and drawings.
- Change Management & Talent Development: Lead change initiatives, including talent development and implementation of new technologies or processes.
- Compliance & Documentation: Ensure all engineering and fabrication activities comply with DoD standards, safety regulations, and company policies.
Requirements
- U.S. Citizenship
- Education and Certification: Technical school graduate; AWS certification. For Engineering Technologist, AA degree.
- Experience: Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in welding large, complex objects; experience in fabrication utilizing various materials and methods
- Technical Skills: MiG and TiG welding, minimum. CNC machining. Laser and plasma cutting. Proficiency with hand and power tools. Proficiency in SolidWorks (3D CAD). Strong knowledge of fabrication and manufacturing practices.
- Leadership and Management Skills: Proven ability work in diverse and multi-generational R&D, engineering and fabrication teams.
Experience in implementing best practices, industry standards, and project management. Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines and maintaining high-quality standards. Ability to inspire and develop a high-performing team, fostering a culture of ownership, accountability, and innovation. - Problem-Solving and Innovation: Demonstrated ability to apply creative and practical problem-solving approaches to address complex engineering challenges. Experience developing and implementing technology roadmaps to guide capital investments and align with strategic goals. Ability to evaluate emerging technologies and assess their feasibility for implementation in defense-related projects.
- Communication and Collaboration: Excellent verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical concepts to non-technical audiences. Strong interpersonal skills and a collaborative mindset to work effectively across diverse, multi-generational and multidisciplinary teams, including government, industry, and academia.
- Defense Industry Experience (Preferred): Experience working on defense-related projects or with DoD standards and regulations is highly desirable. Familiarity with operational security and force protection is a plus.
