THE ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
No two OW Performance Transformation projects are the same . You'll be working with hugely varied and diverse teams to deliver unique and unprecedented strategy and product delivery across industries. The Principal Engineer at Oliver Wyman Performance Transformation is crucial to defining, designing, and delivering solutions that achieve breakthrough impact for our clients - all enabled by best-in-class DevSecOps model, Agile practices, architecture and tech stack.
As a Principal Engineer, you will work alongside Oliver Wyman partners in Performance Transformation and other practice groups, engage directly with clients to understand their business challenges, and craft optimal solutions to be delivered by OW Performance Transformation specialists and consultants delivering strategy, or products into production. You will own all technology and engineering responsibilities for a cross-functional team covering technology, data science, customer experience and design.
When you are a product builder, you will be hands-on defining the architecture, tech stack, leading the engineering team while working with the product owner and designer. You will be instrumental in helping to validate build feasibility, operating costs, handle risk as well as key aspects of security, performance, resiliency, and scalability. Cost benefit and trade-off analysis will be key as you work with the team to build something amazing.
You will collocate with the team regularly or occasionally, working remotely at other times.
We're also hoping you'll be able to bring us experience with at least one of the following:
- Financial services and/or capital markets
- Health and life sciences domain
- Insurance (individual or group)
- Consumer, retail, energy, or transportation domain

YOUR EXPERIENCE

What you'll get to do:
- Provide hands-on technical leadership, training and mentoring staff
- Develop DevSecOps, CI/CD, release engineering strategies applying DORA, SPACE, and other industry leading metrics advocating developer productivity and product stability
- Lead change management initiatives, helping our clients navigate and embrace new ways of working
- Help to improve the OW Performance Transformation Architecture and Engineering specialty
- Design and architect innovative, modern cloud-native digital experiences that are scalable, resilient, and secure
- Communicate complex technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Write code alongside your development team
- Work with state-of-the-art technologies to solve genuine, real-world problems
- Champion good agile practices that provide a foundation for iterative product development
- Build strong relationships with product managers, designers, customer experience and human insights experts
- Enjoy working in a diverse, dynamic, collaborative, transparent, environment where everyone's ideas and opinions are equally valued
- Cross-pollinate good practices and insights between projects and groups within the firm
- Travel 10 - 25% of the time to collaborate with distributed teams or clients as needed
What you'll bring:
For the Principal Engineer role, we are looking for senior hands-on technologists with 10+ years of extensive software engineering experience. The ideal candidate is an excellent communicator and has experience working with both technical and non-technical colleagues in a cross-functional environment. The ideal candidate also has experience pitching and explaining technical architecture and strategy to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Additionally, you should bring:
- Experience with scalable architecture whilst leading and inspiring software development teams
- Hands-on development and delivery experience with a broad mix of languages and technologies
- Real passion for solving customer friction through simple and effective software
- Strong people skills that contribute to an open and collaborative environment
- Experience working with Agile and Lean approaches such as Continuous Integration and Delivery, TDD, and Rapid Prototyping
- Experience communicating technical vision to a variety of team members
- Ability to embrace and reduce uncertainty through continual validated learning
- Practical experience with refactoring, design patterns, design driven development, system and application design, and application security
- Experience with small teams that move fast
We're also hoping you'll be able to show us experience with some of the following. You don't need deep experience with everything here to apply; still, some depth in one or more of these will go a long way:
- How to work with structured and unstructured data
- Multiple programming languages and frameworks with in-depth skills in at least one of the following: JavaScript, NodeJS, React, Python, Go, .NET
- Designing and deploying applications on cloud native infrastructure with providers such as AWS, Azure, or Google using patterns such as serverless or managed services
- Container technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes and microservices
- Infrastructure as Code such as AWS CloudFormation and Terraform
- Ideally some familiarity with CX and HTML5/CSS3
- Search technologies such as Elastic / ELK or LucidWorks
- Authentication/Authorization APIs such as OKTA

The applicable base salary range for this role is $240,000-$260,000.
The base pay offered will be determined on factors such as experience, skills, training, location, certifications, and education, and any applicable minimum wage requirements. Decisions will be determined on a case-by-case basis.
In addition to the base salary, this position may be eligible for performance-based incentives.
